Oscars 2012 Ratings Up From Last Year

Ratings for Sunday night's telecast up 4 percent over 2011's show.

Sometimes "meh" is all you need — especially when you're following up one of the most reviled Oscar hosting teams in recent memory.

That might explain why, despite a night devoid of any major surprises or blockbuster winners, ratings for the 2012 Oscars telecast were up slightly over last year.

According to ABC's preliminary ratings, the Billy Crystal-hosted awards show had a 25.5 rating and 37 share, a 4 percent increase over the 2011 show, which famously bombed thanks to the lack of chemistry between hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Crystal's safe-as-milk ninth go-round as host earned the veteran comedian mostly tepid to negative reviews, but it was enough to boost the big night to one of its best ratings nights since 2007, when the show put up a 27.7 rating and 42 share.

The highest-ever Oscar ratings came in 1998, when the global blockbuster "Titanic" helped draw in more than 55 million viewers.

Ratings might have been even higher if any of the most-nominated movies had posted solid box-office figures as well. But between them, the leading winners, "The Artist" and "Hugo," which both reveled in a nostalgic look back at the dawn of the modern movie era, have grossed just over $100 million combined to date. To put that in perspective, popcorn flick "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," which was blanked in three technical categories, brought in nearly that much in its opening weekend.

More complete ratings numbers are expected later in the day on Monday (February 27).

James Spader Says Goodbye To "The Office"

After joining the NBC series in 2011 actor James Spader has decided to leave "The Office".

The 52 year-old actor was originally brought on to the show to help transition after Steve Carell's departure.

A statement was released today (February 27) by executive producer Paul Lieberstein about the news, reading, "James came to ?The Office? to play a role that was two scenes long in the season 7 finale. He instantly brought so much life and intrigue to the part that those two scenes became a season. James always wanted this to be a one year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television.?

Before making his way to network comedy, Spader enjoyed stints on ABC's "The Practice" as well as the long-running dramedy "Boston Legal".

Oscars 2013 Predictions: Our Picks For Next Year

Because it's never too early to start the wild speculation.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Well, everyone, that's it for our 2012 Oscars coverage. It's been a great awards season. Can't wait to see you next year. ... ... ... Hello, everyone, and welcome to MTV News' 2013 Oscars coverage. It seems like just yesterday that "The Artist" won big and took home Best Picture, but who cares about that movie anymore? That's old news.

This year is sure to be a huge year at the movies, and the nominees for next year's Oscars are already lining up. MTV News has your first look at the likely nominees for the Academy Awards based on everything we know about the Oscars.

Best Supporting Actor
A rare, wide-open race this late in the game, Best Supporting Actor nominations could go to any number of great actors who were not great enough to be considered for the lead. The one lock at this point has to be Christoph Waltz for his work in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained." Waltz won an Academy Award for playing essentially the same character in "Inglourious Basterds," but this time he's a good guy. What could be bad about that?

Best Actress
Here's a category already locked in a dead heat, with a wide variety of potential nominees vying for one of the five spots. The real shock here could be young Quvenzhané Wallis in "Beasts of the Southern Wild," who won over audiences at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and the Academy will jump at any opportunity to honor a child actor. Other potential nominees include Sandra Bullock in "Gravity," a largely solo performance from a previous winner, and Keira Knightley in "Anna Karenina" because it's Keira Knightley in a Joe Wright-directed costume drama. Also, either Charlize Theron or Noomi Rapace could earn nominations for "Prometheus," depending on whose face doesn't get eaten first.

Best Actor
For Best Actor, expect to see a lot of familiar faces and perhaps one familiar face that actually belongs to someone else. I'm speaking, of course, about Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "Looper." It's unclear whether JGL will be in a more supporting role, but early reports peg his prosthetic-enhanced performance as a young Bruce Willis as a career-best. Also, the Academy loves an actor in makeup. You might see the rest of the category filled out with award favorites because they're award favorites, like Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master"), Brad Pitt ("Cogan's Trade"), and a second nomination for John Hawkes ("The Surrogate").

Best Picture
The 2013 Best Picture category should shake out like filling out the cast of a heist movie. Everyone has a unique role to play. You have the musical ("Les Miserable") and the obligatory Tolkien nominee ("The Hobbit"). There's the populist Ben Affleck film ("Argo") and the critic-loved Ben Affleck film ("Untitled Terrence Malick Project'). Plus, you need a current affairs film ("Untitled International Thriller," formerly known as "Kill Bin Laden") and a movie everyone loved but will never win ("The Dark Knight Rises"). That should just about do it.

Leave your predictions for the 2013 Oscars in the comments section!

Justin Bieber Should 'Stay Strong,' Usher Says

Usher might not have known how big Justin Bieber would become when he discovered him a few years back, but he was pretty sure he had found something special.

Since Bieber burst on the scene with his My World EP back in 2009, the 17-year-old has grown up with the world watching. He's gone from up-and-comer to full-fledged pop sensation, racking up chart-topping albums and a box-office hit and becoming an all-around mega-heartthrob — all in two years. Of course, with the good does come negative attention as well. Recently, Bieber was hit with a paternity lawsuit, which has since been dropped. Usher, no stranger to his own controversies, had these words for the Biebs: "Stay strong. And know that all of this comes with the territory." Aside from the drama, Usher is especially proud of Bieber's charitable side. His mentor said he "absolutely" knew the kid from Stratford, Ontario, had a big heart from the start. "To write a check is only half of it, but when you truly take on a responsibility to be a philanthropist, you accept an effort, and I really think that Pencils of Promise is something that has a very bright future," Usher told MTV News at an event for the charity, noting that Bieber is a only a small part of it. Usher — who appears on Bieber's new Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe — gives credit to the folks surrounding the teen superstar, including manager Scooter Braun. "Just judging from the determination and the will power of the entire team around Justin, I see a very, very promising [future] for him as a philanthropist," Usher said.

GIRL FIGHT?!!! Azealia Banks DISSES Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj And Kreayshawn

When Harlem-based rapper Azealia Banks found out that the very-blonde Iggy Azalea made XXL's Freshman Class list (and she didn't), she was not too pleased and had a few not-so-nice things to say. Find out about Azealia's diss inside and also get the deets on what she said about Nicki Minaj and Kreayshawn.

Disclaimer: I barely have a clue who 99% of these chicks involved are and couldn't pick their song out of a playlist with ONLY their tracks. But since others are fans...

Azealia Banks had a few things to say about XXL Magazine selecting white rapper Iggy for their “2012 Freshman Class” (which also includes Machine Gun Kelly, French Montana, & Roscoe Dash).

She tweeted,

“Iggy Azalea on the XXL freshman list is all wrong. How can you endorse a white woman who called herself a ‘runaway slave master’?”

She added,

“Sorry guys. But I’m pro black girl. I’m not anti white girl, but I’m also not here for any1 outside of my culture trying to trivialize very serious aspects of it.”

Do we smell a beef? Well......Iggy didn't respond directly to Azealia, but she tweeted a response to her non-lovers saying,

“You can’t block my blessings! Today I’m celebrating! Get with it or kick rocks! First female freshman. Ever. Period. Thanks world! I used to stick XXL on my bedroom door, now I’m on the cover. Life is great.”

But Iggy wasn't the only target of Azealia, who had a few more things to say about other female rappers. On Nicki Minaj, she said,

“The butt, the hair, the this, the that, all the other shit, like… As much respect that I have for her, we’ve seen you do this already, what else can you do?”

Then.......she talked about Kreayshawn saying,

“You’re a dumb bitch. And you can’t rap. I’ll sit on your face. … Fall back slut.”

Keep it classy Azealia.

Fans who want to hear some new music from Justin Bieber won't have to wait much longer. The singer has revealed that he's set to drop not one but two singles in the very near future.

First off, Bieber's collaboration with Far East Movement, which also features Party Rockers LMFAO, drops on Tuesday. The Twitter announcement for the release included the hashtag "#LiveMyLife," perhaps a hint as to the name of the song. The song's producer, RedOne, recently spoke to MTV News about the track. "I did a few songs with Far East Movement, and one of the songs ... to me, it's a smash," he said. "And Justin sang the chorus. It's a really good song, and I think people are gonna dance like crazy to it." In addition to the release, Bieber revealed that the first single off his forthcoming album Believe will drop in March. "And u guys keep asking. so yeah. my single is NEXT MONTH>#BELIEVE," he wrote. Little else is known about the song, but given the caliber of talent he's been recording with for the album of the same name, it's certain to be something his Beliebers will look forward to. For the album, he's hooked up with everyone from Pharrell and Rodney Jerkins to Drake, Lil Wayne, Timbaland and will.i.am. "The only conversation we've had about Justin's album that we're about to do is it's really important that it's the proper transition, because we've seen him [with] 'Baby,' now we're watching him grow up," vocal producer Kuk Harrell told us. "And we can't just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There's a record in between." It's an exciting time for Bieber. As he continues to up his professional game, he's also about to celebrate a personal milestone: The teen star will turn 18 on March 1.

Memo to Angelina Jolie: Relax!

Angelina Jolie did her best to remind America last night that she's got legs, and she knows how to use 'em. Working her black velvet Atelier Versace dress throughout the Oscars yesterday evening, the actress perpetually struck a pose with her right leg jutting out, her left hand on her hip, and her mouth in a tight smirk. She did this solo, with husband Brad Pitt ... and even when flanked by her adorable mother-in-law!

NBA All-Star Weekend Goes 'Bananas'

'A lot of people take this situation for granted — I don't,' celebrity MVP Kevin Hart says of his win at Orlando game.
By Rob Markman

ORLANDO, Florida — The stars weren't just on the court Sunday night during the NBA 2012 All-Star Game in Orlando as music and Hollywood's brightest came out to watch the Eastern ballers battle against the Western stars. Before the big game, some of our favorites walked the red carpet and talked b-ball with MTV News.

"Bananas" is how actor Pooch Hall described NBA All-Star Weekend in Orlando. Comedian Kevin Hart had a few highlights, but none bigger than when he won the MVP award for Friday's celebrity all-star game. Hart led his team to victory by scoring eight points and six assists. "I played a lot this year. I knew I was going to be playing in the celebrity game. A lot of people take this situation for granted — I don't," he told MTV News in jest. "What I did was I did a lot of weight training, a lot of cardio. It paid off — my endurance was where it was supposed to be. I played 38 minutes, which is unheard of in a celebrity game."

Hart's celebrity teammate Vinny Guadagnino from MTV's "Jersey Shore" didn't fare as well on the stat sheet, but enjoyed the weekend all the same. "It's my first All-Star Game, going for the East, New York, all day," he said.

Another NYC native, Michael Rapaport, wasn't rooting for a hometown hero in the ASG. He was actually hoping that Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard would come up big and have a great outing. But it didn't happen. Instead Dwight finished with nine points for the losing Eastern Conference All-Star squad.

It was a fun but highly contested game that was decided in the final seconds. Pooch Hall just hoped that no one got hurt. Unfortunately though, L.A. Lakers guard Kobe Bryant suffered a broken nose after he was fouled hard by Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade.

Still, there didn't seem to be any hard feelings throughout the entire weekend. "For me, All-Star is about having fun, and you see all these guys who are friends hanging out and having a good time, so it makes it great," LaLa Vasquez Anthony said.

Justin Bieber Crashes Oscars Opening Skit

'I'm here to get you the 18-24 demographic,' Biebs jokes to Billy Crystal during the Academy Awards opener.
By Jocelyn Vena

Billy Crystal knows how to get the kids to watch the Academy Awards. When he wasn't appearing in parody scenes from Oscar-nominated films at the opening of Sunday's (February 26) show, he was taking a second to lock in the tween viewership, with a good dose of Holocaust-related humor for added measure. For his parody of the Woody Allen flick "Midnight in Paris," a tux-wearing Justin Bieber rolled up to the Academy Awards host, who was sitting on a stoop. "Come here, come here," he shouted to Crystal. "What's up? I'm here to get you the 18-24 demographic. So how long do you want me to sit here for?"

"A couple seconds, I think, will do it," Crystal said. The two then exchanged some awkward, lingering glances waiting out the appropriate amount of time before they could move on to the next part of their gag, which, of course, focused on Hitler and the Holocaust. "So what are you going to do now?" Crystal inquired. Bieber replied, "We're gonna go hang out with Hemingway and Fitzgerald." That "we're" he was referring to was Bieber and Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr. Crystal, done up as Davis Jr., added, "And then we're gonna go kill Hitler. Billy, is Biebs the young Sinatra, or am I nuts?" "Oh Sammy, stop it!" Bieber laughed, before pulling off. The opening sketch also included homages to "The Artist," "The Help," "Moneyball" and "The Descendants," to name a few, with appearances by nominees including George Clooney and Jonah Hill. After the sketch closed out, Crystal hit the stage for a musical number. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Sheila E. Brings '80s Vibe To Oscars House Band

Onetime Prince protégé was spotted at the Academy Awards along with composer Hans Zimmer, another bridge to the Pac-Man decade.
By Jason Kaufman

Sheila E. arrives at the 2012 Oscars
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

It was no surprise that the Oscars wanted to go back to the past in 2012. After all, the show's producers brought Billy Crystal back to host for a ninth time. But it appears that those producers also wanted to travel back to the 1980s for a music flashback, hiring legendary drummer Sheila E. for the Oscars house band.

Yes, the same Sheila E. who rocked the charts in 1984 with her funky single "The Glamorous Life" and taught children of the '80s that the coolest way to play a drum kit was standing up.

Sheila E.'s hit came after years of performing with Prince. He had met E. (real name: Sheila Escovedo) in the late '70s after performing with her father, percussionist Pete Escovedo. Years later, he would invite E. to take part in the Purple Rain recording sessions. She would also perform vocals on "Erotic City," the B-side to Rain's first single, "Let's Go Crazy."

Later in 1984, E. broke off on her own to record "Glamorous Life," which would shoot all the way to #7 on Billboard's Hot 100. She followed "Life" up with another chart hit, "A Love Bizarre," in 1985.

E. wouldn't remain away from Prince for long, returning to join his band the New Power Generation and performing on his late-'80s albums Sign 'O' the Times and Lovesexy.

Her appearance at the 2012 Academy Awards may seem a far jump from these milestones of funk pop, but E. has proved versatile over the years, with appearances ranging from jazz festivals to the NAACP Image Awards to a performance on the "American Idol" season 10 finale. She has also jumped into the reality judging ring, lending her voice to the panel on the 2007 season of "Australian Idol."

Sheila E. was not the only musician with connections to the '80s in the Oscars band on Sunday night. Alongside her was film composer Hans Zimmer, who collaborated on the music for the Oscars ceremony with super producer Pharrell Williams. Zimmer provided the score to 1989 Best Picture "Rain Man" and had a connection the music-video decade that goes back further than Sheila E's. He worked with the new wave band the Buggles, reportedly appearing in the video for "Video Killed the Radio Star," which was the first clip ever shown on MTV.

Of course you never know what is real or fake with them, but this one is the real deal. The pic is legit, and creepy. Who wants to see a picture of a dead woman? Apparently I am one of the few who thinks like that because it is flying off shelves and is the topic of every news source imaginable, even internationally. This is also the same publication who also published Elvis Presley?s open casket photo in 1977, and later John Lennon, so I am not surprised in the least. The photo shows the late singer dead in a gold casket with the headline, ?Whitney: The Last Photo!? Readers are either in awe or uproar. I just find it creepy. You can check out the picture of Whitney Houston?s casket and her alleged $500,000 jewels here. Fans were upset and took to Twitter to rant, ?Whoever sold that photo of Whitney Houston in her [...]

HGTV, LA and Dining Room Tables

I've been watching a lot of HGTV since coming to LA. My favorite shows are House Hunters and House Hunters International. There's also another show I like to watch called For Rent, but only because it makes me angry.

When it comes to apartments/homes, I think living in New York for the past eleven years has made me bitter because there was this whiny broad on For Rent a few nights ago who was looking at a huge place—A HUGE PLACE—and was like, "There's no place for a dining room table..."

B*TCH, YOU'RE LUCKY TO GET A KITCHEN IN NEW YORK.

I hated her.

Now there's some stupid lady on House Hunters who wants a townhouse with a fireplace that she can turn on with a light switch. IT HAS TO BE A LIGHT SWITCH because she doesn't want to bend down and flip a switch on the floor.

WHO DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE?

Anyway, I know my LA update is WAY overdue (and truth be told I wrote a long one last week but for some reason it didn't save so I lost the whole thing and I was so angry that I just said, "Ah, f*ck it," and closed the computer instead of rewriting) but to give you a quick update, I AM SO HAPPY HERE. I MEAN, I'M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY. And I think living here and watching HGTV—both of these things combined—has made me realize that New York was just beating me down. I mean, the fireplace lady—yes, she's an idiot. But there's nothing wrong with wanting a dining room table. Why did I get so mad at that lady?

Since being here, at least once a day I ask myself why I have lived in New York for so long. (It's like I had Stockholm Syndrome or something.) CALIFORNIA IS AWESOME. It's like the promised land. It's sunny all the time and there are birds and flowers everywhere. I have space out here. I have a sofa on the patio out here. I HAVE A SOFA OUTSIDE. I haven't seen one rat since I've been here. But hummingbirds? THEY ZIP BY MY HEAD EVERY DAY. I am so happy.

I'm supposed to go back to New York in November, but truth be told, I'm not sure I will.

Nabbing herself another new gig as she tries to improve her financial situation, Lindsay Lohan has been named as an endorser for Jag Jeans. The troubled actress is featured in a new campaign for the denim brand, with the shoot having taken place at the SLS Hotel in Los Angeles. Of choosing LiLo for the gig, a Jag spokesperson told, ?As Jag Jeans? newest endorser, Lindsay embodies the strength and fearlessness of the woman of today. She is unafraid to be who she is. She is fierce yet exudes feminine grace.? Miss Lohan's photo session was spearheaded by world-renowned photographer YuTsai, who has worked in the past with top names including Anne Hathaway, Mila Kunis, Rihanna and Janet Jackson.
On Sunday night, some of the biggest names in the music industry hit up the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas and decided that sparkles and sequins make for the perfect additions to any red carpet get-up. Well, it is Sin City after all. Taylor Swift always seems to bring some of that Nashville sparkle to any red carpet. She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. Nicki Minaj showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit. Selena Gomez turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce & Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Like Gomez, Ke$ha opted for some cut-out detailing in her sparkly, slate-gray dress with tulle skirt. Rihanna looked white hot in her men's tailored Max Azria suit, which she kept sexy and feminine by not buttoning her shirt all the way. Fergie went S&M chic in her little black bandage-type dress by Hervé Léger. Nicole Kidman also wore black. She paired a casual braid hairstyle with a long black gown and Keith Urban. British pop cutie Kyle Minogue looked funky in her little black lacey dress. Inside the show, Britney Spears sat in the audience wearing a skimpy black dress of her own, her hair in loose curls, with little-to-no accessories. While some stars kept the color scheme low-key, Keri Hilson decided to stand out in her billowy little yellow dress paired with a turquoise-colored belt. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress. The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. Joe Jonas wore all black with white sneakers, Ne-Yo paired his periwinkle suit with a Yankees cap and Justin Bieber wore black tuxedo pants with a gold-lamé tuxedo jacket. Which stars' styles caught your eye at the Billboard Music Awards? Tell us in the comments.

Lady Gaga's Path To Album Of The Year Race

MTV News looks back on Mother Monster's huge year and her genre-busting, Grammy-nominated album.

Some artists, like Adele, release albums that are pure Grammy catnip thanks to instant-classic sounds that resonate with the Recording Academy's way-back contingent. Then there's Lady Gaga.

She's been a bridesmaid twice for Album of the Year at the Grammys, losing out on her first two releases. But with her third bid on Sunday, for Born This Way, Gaga appears to have made the kind of career-defining, big-idea album that Grammy voters could not deny. It had all the things the Academy loves in an Album of the Year nominee: ambition, deeply personal tracks that provide a glimpse at the artist's psyche, bold musical explorations, strong sales and chance to prove that they're hip enough to get what the kids are listening to. (Or, in some cases, a new album by Steely Dan.) And, indeed, BTW did have it all, from the jackhammer electronica of "Marry the Night" to the tango-lite grooves of "Americano," the techno attack of "Heavy Metal Lover," hints of biography in "Hair," the lighter-raising ballads in "Yoü and I" and "The Edge of Glory" and, of course, the title track, which served as both a dance-floor phenomenon and an empowerment anthem for the ages. The album, one of the most anticipated of 2011, not only crashed the charts with stellar sales figures of more than one million in its first week, but it also managed to once again bend the will of the music-buying public to meet her quirky, unpredictable muse. Gaga promised her fans that she was pouring everything she had into the disc and when it arrived, complete with a series of trippy, provocative videos that also pushed the envelope, they couldn't have asked for any more from their Mother Monster. Frequent musical collaborator producer Fernando Garibay said the recognition from the Recording Academy was a nice cherry-topper to a year of hard, hard work. "We worked on this album for so long and it was like our baby so it was more about if the fans would love it; that was the most important thing.," he told MTV News. "But of course, nominations, yeah, that's cool."

The first full-length effort from Gaga since her rise to international stardom, Born This Way allowed the singer to exorcise some demons, comment on her newfound fame and, of course, create the kind of over-the-top tracks that would lend themselves to equally eye-popping live performance. "This album was the most personal, the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion and emotion from her and the team," Garibay said. "We all followed her lead on this, on every song ... how intense every avenue of making this record was for us, protecting the record, creative, conceptually, every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme." The video for the title track took the Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. In a year in which she kept turning heads with ever-more-insane red carpet walks, Gaga fittingly raised the bar further at the show, where she performed and accepted the Female Video Moonman as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. In between those appearances, Gaga also managed to circle the globe with the Broadway-worthy Monster Ball Tour, on which she brought the new songs to life every night in a spectacle that was the visual equal of her studio experiments. Though she worked with her core team, which includes Garibay, producer RedOne and DJ White Shadow, Gaga also opened the doors to collaborations with late Bruce Springsteen saxophonist Clarence Clemons and classic rock producer Robert "Mutt" Lange and Queen guitarist Brian May, who helped give "Yoü and I" its epic, AM radio majesty. Gaga was so excited to record the album that she insisted on having a portable studio with her at all times to work on new music even as she toured the world for The Fame Monster, RedOne said. The road work paid off, as the album has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, spinning off a bevy of hits, including the title track, "Marry the Night," "Judas," "Yoü and I" and "The Edge of Glory." And though he's been there before, RedOne added that getting another nod for the biggest Grammy honor of all is new every time. "It's an amazing thing to be nominated for the biggest thing in music industry," he said. "It's always a big honor. I get happy and I never want to get used to it." Chaos! Profanity! Don't miss our Grammy red-carpet live stream this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com.
