Antonio Banderas Discusses the 'Problems' in His Marriage

Antonio Banderas Discusses the 'Problems' in His Marriage

Antonio Banderas admits he and Melanie Griffith don't have the perfect marriage. In a new cover story with AARP's The Magazine, the hunky Spanish star says that throughout his 15 years with Griffith, they have had their fair share of relationship problems.

"We've never hidden it," Banderas says. "We've been open about addictions, in the case of Melanie."

Griffith, 54, has been to rehab three times in the past decade, and she released a statement in 2000 admitting she had an addiction to prescription pain medication. Her last stint in a facility was two years ago.

The 51-year-old actor adds that the couple is open with their three children, because there's nothing gained by pretending. Banderas and Griffith have one child together, Stella, 15, and two older sons from Griffith's previous relationships, Alexander, 26, and Dakota, 21.

"The pretending is the worst, because kids are so smart," Banderas says. "They can see through all of those things, and if you don't talk openly about problems, it creates a very dark place. They carry that through the rest of their lives, to their marriages, to their kids."

Griffith, who was also interviewed for the magazine, has her own perspective on her struggles with addiction.

"Antonio was supportive to the extent that he can be, but if you're not an alcoholic or drug addict, and you find out that your wife is a bad one, it's hard to deal with," she explained.  "... I wish he would go to a meeting with me or to Al-Anon, but it's very foreign to him. Addiction runs in my family but not in his."

But Griffith still thinks Banderas is amazing: "I don't mean that against him. I would like him to do more, but it's a difficult thing to have happen in any family, and in that way he has been totally by my side. He really is the greatest guy."

Banderas has two high-profile films coming out this fall: the Spanish Pedro Almodovar drama The Skin I Live In, which premieres Oct. 12 at the New York Film Festival, and the family friendly Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots, which hits theaters Nov. 4.
