Ewan McGregor has a reputation as an excellent actor, a swoon-worthy leading man -- and a guy who's not afraid to take off his pants when the role demands it. For years, McGregor has been one of the few male stars willing to do full-frontal nudity (and perhaps one of the few we want to see naked). But now that he's approaching 40, the actor says he's feeling a bit... overexposed. McGregor tells the U.K. newspaper Daily Express that he doesn't plan on stripping down in any upcoming films.
"Sex scenes are terribly exposing and rarely of any use in learning about character," McGregor complains to the paper.
Ewan McGregor abstaining from love scenes feels like a loss for womankind, but at least the actor has good -- and dare we say, feminist -- reasons.
"I'm getting older and the actresses stay younger," says McGregor, calling out Hollywood's double standard. "I don't want to become Clint Eastwood, where his love interests seem 50 years younger than him. You never want female costars to feel like you're taking advantage of the situation."
Even if he's heading in a more conservative direction, McGregor defends his choice to go au naturel in films like Trainspotting, Velvet Goldmine, The Pillow Book and Young Adam.
"It's all about life," he explains. "We're naked at the end of the day and we're sometimes naked in the middle of the day -- if we're lucky. It may seem like I'm obsessed with sex but it's actually the opposite."
We doubt McGregor's career will suffer if he keeps his clothes on, since some of his biggest hits -- Moulin Rouge!, the Star Wars prequels -- were strictly PG affairs. But here's a thought: Maybe instead of swearing off love scenes, McGregor could pledge to only star in movies opposite women his own age. Now that would shake things up in Hollywood!
